How to Ace an Online Interview

In an age as advanced as today, especially due to the covid pandemic, the way we work and the way we compete for work is radically changing.

Like it or not, digital interviews are an increasing reality.

If you’re among the many people who are camera shy, it’s time to take steps to fix that because your next job could depend on it.

Video interviews can understandably be challenging for job seekers.

But with some practice and the right mindset, you can put yourself in a position to shine as easily as you would in a face-to-face interview.

Here’s the catch: the ways communication is conveyed in these interviews is 55% via human face, 38% via tone of voice, and ONLY 7% from the words that are said.

Shocker? Well, read on to prepare yourself for anything and everything related to video/phone interviews!

Choose the right setting: It’s of vital importance that you find a quiet spot with a well lit background to give your interview.

Make sure that there aren’t any disturbances that could bother you.

Do a technical check: Using a laptop is better than logging in from your phone. Make sure you’ve checked the audio and video settings of your device and they’re all in place. Ensure a stable internet connection and keep your device charged up.

Reality check: Technology just fails us sometimes, regardless of how many times you may have checked your Internet connection. So, before you begin a video interview, provide the interviewer with a phone number where you can be reached if there are any technical difficulties.

Dress the part: Although you’re not going into an office to meet with the interviewer face to face, you still need to dress appropriately for a video interview. Don’t look shabby and wear properly ironed clothes.

Be a well-prepared early bird: Always log in 10-15 minutes before the time allotted to you. A delay in joining creates a bad first impression that is tough to get past.

Speak with an upbeat tone: The way you project your words makes a lot of difference. Take the right, necessary pauses and don’t speak too fast.

Align and center yourself before every interview.

Mind your body language: Remember, maintaining eye contact during a video interview is crucial. Your camera should be at eye level.

Don’t look up or down and avoid fidgeting.

Do not rely on notes of any kind that will need you to look away from the camera as that isn’t a pleaser for the interviewer.

Have applicable documents nearby: Make sure you have all you need for the interview right beside you to avoid any last minute hassle.

Be prepared: Lastly, like any other interview, be prepared with answers to common questions, write down important information and get your queries cleared.

Make sure to end the interview on a pleasant note and ask about the next steps.

Keep these tips in mind during your video/phone interview and you'll be one step closer to landing your dream job.

All the best!
